In patients with probable sepsis

In patients with probable sepsis, it is crucial to obtain blood cultures before administering antibiotics.

Scientifically, two sets of bottles should be collected:

  • One aerobic
  • One anaerobic
Collecting at least one set rather than a single aerobic culture bottle is imperative.

Automated blood culture systems provide a positive signal as soon as growth is detected. With the help of Molecular Rapid Diagnostic Tests (mRDTs), identification and antimicrobial resistance gene detection can be achieved in less than 3 hours.

Antimicrobial resistance gene testing is highly valuable for initiating appropriate therapy without significant delays. This testing is part of currently available mRDTs like Biofire (Multiplex PCR with resistance gene detection such as NDM, OXA-48, etc.).
